This book presents English translations of ten Matengo folktales from Southern Tanzania, which the author recorded in the mids. Matengo is the author's mother tongue. In addition to the tales, some of which include songs presented in both Matengo and English, there are commentaries on each tale and a concluding essay on the folktale.

Mbele's approachable and concise style of commentary is informative and convincing. Folklore is rich amongst the Matengo and folk tales are passed on from generation to generation orally.

The folk tales of Matengo people have been recorded by Catholic missionaries, and Fr. Johannes P. Häfliger was the first person to publish some of folk tales. Motengo language as such does not have any script and does not have a uniform.

On August 2,during Afrifest in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, I performed African folktales as part of the festival program.

I chose two tales--"Hawk and Crow" and "The Monster in the Rice Field"--from my book Matengo Folktales. The photo on the left shows me as I was impersonating the monster in the second tale, who was snatching away members of a.
